Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio was Verdi’s first opera, and is set in the town of Bassano in Italy. It was first performed in 1839 at Teatro alla Scala in Milan and, despite limited success, resulted in the young composer receiving two further commissions from the theatre’s impresario.
